The tireless traditional midwife of Taido
Ekua Sekyerewa is a traditional midwife in Taido, a remote village in the Central Region of Ghana. She has delivered thousands of babies and is considered a heroine here. Sometimes, she walks for miles alone at night to deliver babies. Following a WHO directive, traditional midwives like Ekua Sekyerewa have been asked to stop delivering babies and rather encourage women to deliver at the hospitals. With the acute shortage of midwives, especially in the rural areas and difficult access to hospitals, is it wise to stop Ekua Sekyerewa from delivering babies or should she be trained to provide better maternal care? This documentary gets to the bottom of one of the biggest dilemmas facing maternal health care in Ghana.
